WHY WE CELEBRATE 4TH OF JULY: We as Americans celebrate the 4th of July as our country's Independence Day. On July 4, 1776 the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. This powerful and historical document formally declared independence from Great Britain. This moment in history can be considered the most important moment in American History. 12 of the 13 Colonies voted for Independence on July 2, 1776. On July 4, 1776 the US Congress formally accepted the Declaration of Independence and was signed by 56 men known as our Founding Fathers. This is when America became America and power over the new American people shifted from a tyrant to the people. "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.", Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence gave men liberties and privileges never done before in history. Effects of this would lead to more enlightment thinking and inspire other countries to want independence. The first 4th of July celebration took place a year after in 1777 in Philadelphia. 13 shots were fired out of a cannon representing the 13 colonies for the celebration along with 13 fireworks. Celebration also took place in several other cities.
