Small Boat N2K Network Kit

Installing compact sized NMEA2000® networks is now quicker and easier with the introduction of the Small Boat Network from Actisense. This "backbone in a box" is the equivalent of four T-pieces, two terminators and a power tap, all molded into a single, compact case. This innovative design provides a significant cost, time and space savings compared to traditional NMEA2000® starter kits.

Cables are easily connected/disconnected after mounting thanks to the ambidextrous, molded-in screw locations and the built-in standoff. Once the integral 3 meter power cord is connected to the vessel's power supply, an NMEA2000® network for up to four devices is ready to use, truly taking ‘plug & play’ to the next level. The Small Boat Network can even be expanded, as long as all NMEA2000® installation requirements are properly observed.

Specifications:

  • Data Interface: NMEA 2000
  • Box Dimensions: 2"H x 7"W x 9"L WT: 0.8 lbs

Good Starting Point

I connected a Vesper Cortex I installed to this Actisense N2K network so that I could expand the data available over the Cortex's WiFi to include existing sensors on a 1999 Mainship Pilot 30. The primary data I wanted to integrate was an old Raymarine ST60 depth sounder with a burned out screen. To do so, I used Raymarine's SeaTalk 1 to SeaTalk NG Converter Kit (E22158) to get depth readings across to the NMEA 2K network. Because this Actisense kit already has termination on both ends, I did not terminate the Raymarine converter, and this worked fine. The ST60 now draws power from the network, so I disconnected the existing power to the ST60. In retrospect, I could have used the Actisense A2K-KIT-3, terminating one end of it and then terminating the NMEA 2K network at the Raymarine converter. But everything worked fine, and based on what I understand, I can extend the network using devices like Actisense's A2K-4WD four way instrument drop. Now I have the depth sounder data displaying on Navionics and AquaMaps on my tablet. I plan to add additional sensors to get even more data on my tablet apps.
